Kenya’s Innovation Outlook 2022 Dissemination Workshop Brief

July 29, 2022 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm UTC+3

Background

Given the complexity and emergent characteristics of innovations in emerging economies such as Kenya, there is a need for models that can measure the dynamic nature of innovations in these countries. In an attempt to measure and champion relevant policy engagements on innovations within institutions while promoting practical skills necessary to create innovations that impact people, the Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA) has committed to start publishing an annual national innovation outlook report dubbed ‘Kenya Innovation Outlook’. The outlook report documents; (i) a framework, sets of tools, and metrics with which the county’s policy management and innovations are mapped; (ii) maps and explains the various domains that facilitate discussions on innovations; (iii) outlines indicators and datasets in the specific domains to measure performance of innovation in the country (iv) sets insights and examples of impact case studies on innovations drawing evidence from surveys.

Workshop activities

To validate the information generated in the report, the Africa Research and Impact Network (ARIN) working in collaboration with KeNIA is organizing virtual validation workshop for stakeholders in the Science Technology and Innovation landscape in Kenya on the 29th of July 2022 from 2:00pm -3:30 pm East Africa time. The workshop will include a general discussion on the final innovation outlook for Kenya. It will do so by presenting progress in coming up with the report and specifically sharing:
1. A framework developed to measure innovation in the country
2. Proposed innovation indicators derived from the framework
3. The initial results from a series of case studies and review of policy documents
4. Recommendation
5. Way forward
