The African Research and Impact Network (ARIN) played a key role in a recent virtual meeting focused on a groundbreaking initiative, Building Climate Resilience of the Urban Poor (BCRUP). Held on May 31st, 2024, the meeting marked a significant step towards empowering African nations to safeguard their most vulnerable populations from the escalating threats posed by climate change.

Convened by Kenya’s Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development (MLPW&HUD) in collaboration with United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa), the meeting brought together focal points from BCRUP pilot countries across the continent. ARIN actively participated, contributing its expertise and enhancing collaboration to establish a robust framework and action plan for program implementation.

“The BCRUP initiative presents a critical opportunity to address the very real challenges faced by Africa’s urban poor communities,” stated Dr. Joanes Atela, Executive Director of ARIN. “At ARIN, we are committed to leveraging our research and knowledge management capabilities to empower these communities and build resilience for a more sustainable future.”

During the meeting, ARIN’s Dr. Assouhan Jonas, Lead Researcher, presented a detailed vulnerability assessment methodology that will be employed by participating countries. This crucial step will provide a comprehensive understanding of the unique challenges faced by each urban poor community, paving the way for targeted interventions and solutions.

BCRUP’s focus on knowledge sharing and capacity building aligns perfectly with ARIN’s core mission. The organization’s participation in the program extends beyond technical expertise. ARIN will also serve as a knowledge hub, facilitating the exchange of best practices and lessons learned throughout the program’s implementation.

The BCRUP initiative marks a significant milestone in the fight to protect Africa’s urban poor from climate change. ARIN, through its active participation and commitment to knowledge sharing, stands at the forefront of this crucial effort.
